An Orphan No More

Meet Darlene(don't get too used to the name though, we will be changing that). Isn't she cute?! She lives in an orphanage in Eastern Europe. Why is she an orphan? Because she has down syndrome. Where she is from she is considered unworthy - her life has no value. One of the many "least of these" locked away in an orphanage. No love, no family, no medical care, no therapies. If she did not find a family, when she turns four she would be institutionalized. The majority of those children die within the first year from a lack of love, attention, and nutrition. This is what life would look like for her:

Once our eyes are opened, we cannot pretend we don't know what to do. God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows what we know, and holds us responsible to act." Prov. 24:12

God clearly commands us to care for the orphans and widows. Can we save the world? No. But we can save Darlene's world. This is what God is calling us to do. Sure, it isn't the simplest, and definitely not the cheapest way to add to our family. It's not about that though. If it were my Hunter, or my Zander, I would cross the ocean many times over, give everything I had, and whatever else it would take. Darlene is God's Hunter and God's Zander. She is fearfully and wonderfully made, worthy, cherished, and loved by the creator of the universe. Why would we not cross the ocean many times over, give everything we have, and whatever else it may take - to get to her.

If everything goes well we could be traveling to get her in 6 months or less. That excites and scares the crap out of me! We have 14,000 to raise. That may seem like a lot to us but is nothing for God. Please keep our family in prayer as we raise the money, complete our paperwork, and travel to get our girl. If you feel lead to give we have a chipin on the side of the blog where money can be donated and is tax deductible. You must specify that the money is for Darlene in order for it to go to our account. Or you can donate directly here http://reecesrainbow.org/sponsorlim at our family sponsorship page.

Are we crazy? probably. Does God love it? I think so!

  6. Oh Jessica, how awesome of you guys to save this beautiful child. I cannot believe how terrible some countries are to Down's Syndrome children. They are such sweet amazing souls. How could anyone treat them in such a horrible way :( That breaks my heart. Blessings as you go through this process!
